Life in the Garden

The Great Garden Gossip

Percival and Mabel were two rabbits who believed they were very sophisticated creatures—mainly because they stood upright and wore clothes, which, in their opinion, already put them several carrots above everyone else.

They met every morning in the flower garden, right between the daisies and the roses, to discuss important matters.

“Good morning, Mabel,” said Percival, straightening his tiny waistcoat. “You’ll never guess what I overheard near the compost heap.”

Mabel adjusted her bonnet and sighed. “If this is about the snail again, Percival, I already know he’s slow and dramatic.”

“No, no,” whispered Percival, leaning in. “The humans are planting new vegetables.”

Mabel gasped so loudly a butterfly fell off a petunia.

“New vegetables? Without consulting us?” she said. “That’s outrageous. Absolutely against garden protocol.”

Percival nodded gravely. “I believe it’s lettuce. Possibly carrots. I may have fainted briefly.”

They both stared thoughtfully at a bright patch of flowers.

“Well,” said Mabel at last, “if carrots are involved, we must act maturely.”

“Of course,” Percival agreed. “Very maturely.”

They immediately began planning how to eat the vegetables first while loudly blaming the birds.

As they hopped off, Percival paused and said, “Same time tomorrow?”

Mabel smiled. “Naturally. Gardens don’t gossip themselves.”

And with that, the two most overdressed rabbits in the garden disappeared into the flowers, convinced they were running the place—one carrot at a time.
